Acid Reflux Surgery

It is a known fact that unhealthy eating can trigger acid reflux. Scientific research showed that anyone, even babies and young children have a predisposition to develop acid reflux (or GERD). This condition is met mostly in babies and young children but over time, disappears. Acid reflux which is also referred to as gastro-esophageal reflux disease may affect adults as well. This is a disease that could occur at any point in time especially to people who had often eat large meals which contain many acidic foods. It could even happen to individuals with a history of GERD, therefore, experience recurrences of the condition as a result of unhealthy eating habits.

An unhealthy diet and an unsuitable eating plan can trigger acid reflux. When someone consumes a heavy meal comprising of many acid foods, an anomaly in the stomach can happen like bringing back the food to the esophagus and throat. Acid reflux is difficult to explain because this disorder can occur anytime but is probably going to after numerous unhealthy, heavy meals.

Many people suffering from acid reflux can manage their condition through medical treatment and suitable diet. Some people with a serious state of GERD should consider surgery since for most people this might be the best solution for this condition. There are quite a few surgical procedures that GERD patients can opt from. The most successful and safe surgeries for acid reflux are: Laparoscopic anti-reflux surgery (Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication) and Intraluminal Endoscopic surgery.

Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication
This type of procedure is also known as fundoplication and is the most popular type of acid reflux surgery. This procedure is carried out by tightening the walls of the esophagus next to the stomach and then adding pressure to the lower esophageal muscles. When the pressure between the stomach and esophagus increases, the content of the stomach does not tend to flow upwards towards the throat and esophagus. Another popular method carried out by some patients with acid reflux, is the tightening of the esophageal valve in order to close the esophagus and avoid gastric acid to enter.

Intraluminal endoscopic acid reflux surgery
This is another type of surgery that many patients prefer. This surgical procedure follows a similar procedure as the fundoplication with the exception that it involves a small tubular apparatus that is inserted in the body to view the internal organs that require surgery. This allows the actual biopsy or procedure to be carried out through an apparatus called endoscope.  Intraluminal endoscopic surgery is fast and has low risks for the patients. Hence, a post-surgery treatment is not necessary but surely speeds up recovery for patients.

Thanks to the progress of medical science and countless modern treatments, acid reflux can now be cured. Patients suffering from GERD can now rid of the condition with one of the options provided to them i.e. by taking medication, following an appropriate diet or surgery. Despite that surgery is generally recommended to patients with chronic acid reflux it is now accessible to individuals with less aggravated conditions of GERD.

In conclusion, surgical procedures have been the most widespread way of getting cured from acid reflux entirely and permanently.
