How To Prevent Acid Reflux
Acid reflux is a slightly painful and irritating condition that is able to be prevented when it is in the early stages of it. People who learn to prevent it are able to live their life without having to worry about the pain and problems of dealing with the more severe types of acid reflux. The best way to prevent it is to learn how to control your diet and the way in which you live.
Know The Triggers
One of the best ways to know how to prevent acid reflux is to know what triggers an attack. Most physicians believe that food is the number one trigger – which is why they encourage people to have a food diary. This will show them when the attacks came on and what they have eaten to know what to avoid.
Other Factors
For some people food is not the only factor that can cause acid reflux to flare up. There are other things that we do in our life which can exacerbate the problem. Are you eating too much food during each meal? Are you eating too close to when you lie down for bed? Sometimes it is best to eat smaller meals throughout the day instead of three large meals. Also make sure that you eat at least two or three hours before you lie down.
More Water
Water is one of the best things that you could be drinking right now. Large amounts, of carbonated drinks, alcohol, and other acidic drinks could make things worse. But water doesn’t contain any of these harmful ingredients and will keep you well hydrated.
Stay Elevated During Sleep
Sometimes when we lie down to sleep the position we are in causes the acid in the stomach to back up. Try to sleep propped up about six inches to keep the acid in your stomach where it belongs.
Medication
When these are not enough to help you may need to seek help from one of the many over the counter acid medications. If these are not helping and the symptoms seem to be getting worse than you may need to speak with your doctor for something a bit stronger. It could be that you have a more severe type of acid reflux.
