Problems Associated With Severe Acid Reflux
There are many people who have lived with acid reflux for so long that they have grown accustomed to the symptoms. This makes it difficult for them to not only recognize but to learn to handle the more severe forms of acid reflux and the symptoms that are associated with them.
If you believe that you are suffering from severe acid reflux and that you are suffering from acute, chronic pain than you should not have to live with it. No treatment will just make it worse over time and it could be a sign of deeper and more serious types of health problems. Most of these conditions can be problems that are associated with the esophagus.
Esophagitis
It is possible for severe acid reflux to cause stomach acid to constantly enter into or come into contact with the esophagus. When this happens it can cause ulcers or bleeding in the esophagus.
Barrett’s Esophagus
If you do nothing to treat esophagitis you are at risk of it evolving into Barrett’s esophagus. This is a cell abnormality that can be found in the esophagus in which the cells become something different. In at least one percent of patients with this problem it is a health condition that can cause cancer in the esophagus.
Strictures
It is possible that when you have not treated sever acid reflux it will damage the lining that is in the esophagus and it will be scarred. The scar tissue will narrow the esophagus – caused strictures. This keeps food and drinking from properly reaching the stomach.
Esophageal Cancer
This disease is found more often n men and is caused when there are cancer cells in the tissue of the esophagus. It is caused by severe acid reflux, GERD, smoking, alcoholism, and Barrett’s esophagus. Early on this problem will not have any symptoms – besides those from the severe acid reflux. But as it progresses it will cause weight loss and painful swallowing.
