Treating Acid Reflux During Pregnancy
There are many things that a woman will experience when she is pregnant. One such symptom is acid reflux. This is caused when the placenta is producing the progesterone hormone – which is causing the muscles of the uterus to relax. This will also cause the valve that is separating the esophagus and the stomach to relax. When this happen the gastric acids will travel back up and create acid reflux.
Although trying to eliminate all of the problems that are associated with acid reflux can be difficult there are still methods that you can do which will make it easier.
Keep from eating or drinking anything that can create gastrointestinal problems. This includes, alcohol, anything that is carbonated, caffeine, chocolate, fruits and juices that are high in citrus, and processed meats.
Instead of eating large meals you should eat several smaller meals during the day. Make sure to eat them slowly and chew everything up.
During your meals you should not be drinking large amounts. Try to sip slowly in between meals.
It helps to chew gum after you have finished eating. This will help to stimulate the salivary glands – which will help to neutralize acid.
It is not helpful to eat close to the time that you are sleeping. Your body needs two to three hours to digest.
Prop yourself up with pillows while you sleep. This will help to keep the stomach acids down and help with digestion.
Wear comfortable clothing that is loose and will not tighten around your stomach.
If your doctor approves it – try to use over the counter medicines that will help with the pain.
